　　在當(dāng)代，元旦指公元紀(jì)年的歲首第一天。自西歷傳入我國(guó)以后，元旦一詞便專用于新年，傳統(tǒng)的舊歷年則稱春節(jié)。

　　而在此之前，元旦一直是指農(nóng)歷歲首第一天的。元是“初”“始”的意思，旦指“日子”，元旦合稱即是“初始的日子”，也就是一年的第一天。1949年9月27日，中國(guó)人民政治協(xié)商會(huì)議第一界全體會(huì)議決議：“中華人民共和國(guó)紀(jì)年采用公元紀(jì)年法”，即是我們所說(shuō)的陽(yáng)歷，為了區(qū)別農(nóng)歷和陽(yáng)歷兩個(gè)新年，又鑒于農(nóng)歷二十四節(jié)氣中的“立春”恰在農(nóng)歷新年的前后，因此便把農(nóng)歷正月初一改稱為“春節(jié)”，陽(yáng)歷一月一日定為“元旦”，至此，元旦才成為全國(guó)人民的歡樂(lè)節(jié)日。

　　慶賀新年的開(kāi)始，歡度元旦可說(shuō)是世界各國(guó)各地區(qū)的.普遍習(xí)俗。在我國(guó)，還列入了國(guó)定假日。我國(guó)和世界上大多數(shù)國(guó)家、地區(qū)采用公歷紀(jì)年法，把1月1日定為新年的開(kāi)始，稱作“元旦”。

　　由于世界各國(guó)所處的經(jīng)度位置不同，各國(guó)的時(shí)間也不同，因此，“元旦”的日期也有不同。如大洋洲的島國(guó)湯加位于日界線的西側(cè)，它是世界上最先開(kāi)始的一天的地方，也是最先慶祝元旦的國(guó)家。

　　而位于日界線東側(cè)的西薩摩亞則是世界上最遲開(kāi)始新的一天的地方。按公歷計(jì)，我國(guó)是世界上第12個(gè)開(kāi)始新年的國(guó)家。
